Grasshopper Sparrow: The Rarest Of Florida Birds
This may be your last chance to see this bird before it goes extinct. The grasshopper sparrow is now the rarest of Florida birds.
A widespread disease has killed these birds. These could be the next bird extinction since 1987 when the dusky seaside sparrow became extinct.
Grasshopper Sparrows are around five inches long. They have short tails with black and gray feathers. Their heads are flat.
These birds are heard more than they are seen. Listen for a call with two or three notes followed by a buzz similar to an insect noise.
Grasshopper Sparrows reside in meadows, pastures, and other open areas.
Painted Bunting
If you enjoy brilliant colors, you should keep your eyes open for Painted Buntings. The males are some of the most colorful birds in the US with blue heads, red bellies, and green backs.
During breeding season, males are often in open areas singing.
Females and young birds are solid yellow-green with lighter undertones. They are still brighter than most songbirds.
These birds are about five inches long. They are larger than an American Goldfinch and smaller than an Eastern Bluebird.
Painted Buntings are typically found in weedy habitats or less dense forests.
The number of Painted Buntings has declined recently because of cowbirds taking over nests. Painted Buntings are frequently captured to be cage birds.
Listen for high-pitched, loud calls to find these birds.
